Later the fire banked to a faint rose, the clouds turned indistinct, and a bat traveled directly overhead against an ambiguous neutral blue. Dewy airs began to settle. A slight silver crescent followed not far behind the sun, and after it a world of watery things.

In a sense this is the opposite of my usual perspective, which is looking up at the Blue Ridge. Here I’m on the ridge, at 3125 feet, looking down (at the Shenandoah Valley). On the way to Big Meadows, below Lewis Mountain. In the haze the ridge of Massanutten Mountain was barely distinguishable.
