I thought I had plenty of canvas ready to go, turned out I had none. So at the last minute I found a board (Gessobord, same size). After that, almost everything that happened in this painting was a surprise.

While I was witnessing and sketching this sunset in northern Albemarle County, Virginia, photographer Rick Stillings was shooting it about 15 miles south, below Charlottesville, then posting his photos last night. The big dark clouds that were to my left (or south) and in the way of the sun, were clearly to his right, and the results were spectacular. So I decided to do a variation on one of Rick’s shots.
