Pick ’Em, Part 1 – Sunset, Saturday, 5 October 2013

William Van Doren, PICK ’EM, PART 1. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

There were two almost “opposite” sunsets within 15 minutes of each other, so ... I decided to paint both. (To quote the great Ernie Banks, Let’s play two!) In the first, the clouds were a “negative’ or shadow element; then, to my surprise (see next painting), they became the color element. Making the whole quandary even more interesting, this sunset was also to be a commission to commemorate a birthday. Nice day for a birthday.
