Rivermont Collage (Sunset, Monday, 12 September 2011)

William Theodore Van Doren, RIVERMONT COLLAGE (Sunset from Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

A loose composite of the sequence of skies and mountains I saw while driving along Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg. I’m very happy I didn’t hurt anyone in the street while I looked between and over buildings, around and through trees, etc.

William Theodore Van Doren, COLD BLUE CLOUDS FOR A WARM BLUE DAY (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

Today was indeed beautiful. The light, after all the rain, was not like light but something like a sphere of clarity.

Elegy in Clouds & Haze (Sunset, Saturday, 3 September 2011)

William Theodore Van Doren, ELEGY IN CLOUDS & HAZE (Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

The following, by the way, was the sunset 16 years ago tonight, near the beginning of the Moment & Horizon series. The vantage point is essentially the same, except that today the Blue Ridge was lost in haze and I included local Piney Mountain to the north.

William Theodore Van Doren, Sunset, 3 September 1995 (From Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va.) Oil on watercolor block, 6 x 9.
