It had been snowing all day, then at a few minutes before sunset the snow became mixed with sleet. The National Weather Service at that hour reported “Unknown Precipitation.”

No, I didn’t make up the title, nor is it something out of Don DeLillo. “Unknown Precipitation” is exactly what the local National Weather Service station at Charlottesville airport reported last night during our mix of sleet, rain, freezing rain, and other mysteries.
